I’m undertaking a 1000-day reinvention project, blogging here daily to track my progress. In Saturday Reflections, I take time out to reflect.
I recently made a small change to my morning routine, and it’s having a big payoff for me.
Previous to this change, I would get up, have a cup of coffee, and write my blog post here. Then I would get dressed, make the bed, and take Bo for a quick walk. I’d return home, pour another cup of coffee, and, ideally, dive into writing.
Instead of diving into writing after the dog walk, I often wasted time on non-writing activities. I might check stock market futures, and look at charts of my biggest positions. I might respond to emails. I might read news online. I had lost writing momentum by taking time to get dressed and walk the dog.
Last week, I changed up the routine. Instead of stopping writing after publishing a blog post here, I continued writing, this time working on my big creative project, turning my memoir draft into a set of personal essays. I poured the second cup of coffee and stayed in my jammies and bathrobe.
This seems to work really well. I keep momentum up in writing. Bo doesn’t start agitating for his walk because he hasn’t gotten the cue of my making the bed and getting dressed. I keep the caffeine flowing (this may not be a good thing, I know).
