Day 114 of 1000: Creating writing momentum

I’m undertaking a 1000-day reinvention project, blogging here daily to track my progress. In Sunday Planning, I plan for the week ahead.

Get some writing momentum going. That’s my plan. Do a lot of writing. Do it with flow. Do it in my own voice. Use AI for reference and research only, not writing. I started this morning by reworking my chapter two outline, in which I discuss the rationalization and commoditization of dating in modern times, mostly via online dating apps. Now I feel excited about actually writing a draft of the chapter.

I can write so easily here, because I put little emphasis on how it’s organized, what exactly I say, word choice, and even presence of typos. I need to bring that same energy to my book manuscript.

My sister sent me an email about a weeklong free book writer’s bootcamp from Hay House. It starts tomorrow, which seems perfect. But doing a writer’s bootcamp vs just sitting my butt in my office chair (or standing at my standing desk) and doing the hard work of actually writing? Not a good plan.

I wrote about the trap of thinking there’s a golden path–one right way to do something–when you’re starting something new that you don’t know how to do. A related trap is thinking you need more education or skills before you can do the thing you want to do. And yet another related one is thinking that there is someone you can outsource your hard work to, whether that’s a book coach or a developmental editor or a writing critique group. I’m not saying none of those can be helpful. But they don’t substitute for getting to your desk and doing hard, good work yourself.

I’m going to wrap this up here and go to my other desk–my book writing desk–and start writing chapter two based on that outline I just made. See you tomorrow!
