Look to Your Future

Hindsight often masquerades as wisdom. It tempts you to believe that what worked before will pay off again.

Too often, you audit your history to find the right thing to do. You inventory what you enjoyed, what you feared, and what paid off to find the straight line forward. This is the trap of reckoning: choosing what can be accounted for over what is alive.

Instead, meet your future with recklessness. Stop trying to calculate the return on investment of your soul’s unfolding. Stop elucidating options, estimating their likelihood, and computing the expected value of different courses of action. Your life’s unfolding cannot be reduced to a set of knowable probabilities.

The future cannot be extrapolated. It can only be entered.

What should you do instead? Stop defending the person you were and start acting as the person who is arriving. You do not discover your values fully formed. You create them through the choices you make and the actions you take.

Today, I take action not by studying what lies behind me, but by surrendering to the transformations in front of me.
