Ack this heat! When I got up this morning it was already 75°F outside my house (I have an external sensor, and the measurement shows up on my internal thermostat). It’s supposed to reach a high of 101.
Yesterday was a brief respite from the heat dome heat. When I woke up, it was only 67 outside so I could run the attic fan for a couple hours with the windows open to bring in the cool air.
My older daughter arrived from Atlanta yesterday, in part trying to escape Atlanta’s oppressive muggy heat, but it’s only supposed to be 86 degrees there today. However, with humidity over 93%, it will feel as hot there as it does here.
This week I’m focused on building, both digitally and physically.
Building an options wheel manager
Yesterday I downloaded the ChatGPT Codex CLI so I could start building my own options wheel management web app. Right now I manage my options trades in Google Sheets, which works pretty well. But by building a web app, I can add some capabilities that would be difficult if not impossible in Google Sheets. For example, using their Trader API for individuals, I can grab current market data, submit orders, and more.
Using an LLM to build software eliminates so much accidental complexity in coding. But the essential complexity remains. I have to decide how to take my options wheeling process and instantiate it in software. I already have a kind of prototype in the form of my Google Sheets spreadsheet, but a web app provides a lot more flexibility for supporting my workflow. Behind the workflow, however, will be a relational database that represents the entities and relationships among them.
I’m waiting on approval to use the Schwab developer API but meanwhile today I’m going to set up a way to create a watchlist of ETFs I’m considering for short put entry (or managing open short puts, or having been assigned, managing covered calls).
Meanwhile, today I’m going to get the application navigation set up, and start on my ETF watchlist page.
Building a book assemblage
In addition to building my Options Wheel Manager app, I’m continuing work on the book assemblage art piece that I’m submitting to the WCACO (Un)Altered Books show.
I’m really enjoying the process of putting it together. I’m using a combination of adhesives and hardware to attach the various elements and ensure the structure is stable. I’ve got wood glue, E 6000 (not used yet), and clear construction adhesive. I bought variety packs of screws and bolts with nuts. I have a bunch of L brackets and other hardware that the guy I bought this house from left in the built in drawers in the garage.
I think it’s looking great, and I’m having so much fun.
Other things happening this week
My older daughter is in town, and we’re having a belated birthday celebration for her next Saturday. She and I and my younger daughter love to cook, so we’ll be putting together a feast for the attendees.
I have my first post-retinal surgery optometry appointment Wednesday. Excited to see how my vision has improved. I still have significant distortion in my left eye, but the opthalmologist said that things were looking much improved, and my vision with a contact in was already 20/40 compared to 20/80 (corrected) before the surgery.
My foster dog Sally needs to see the vet for what I hope is a minor issue regarding her back end. She is licking somewhat frequently, but no scooting so far. I’m waiting to hear from the foster organization when that might be.
Besides that will be the usual life activities: walking the dogs each morning, keeping the house and garden in good shape, options trading each day, working out. Trying to keep cool!
